Review:

Harper Bliss is well-known for delivering steamy, engaging age-gap romances, often set in high-powered, professional settings. Next in Line for Love follows that familiar formula but doesn’t quite reach the heights of some of her best work. While it’s an entertaining read with moments of strong chemistry, the rushed pacing and inconsistent character development keep it from being a standout.

Plot: A Corporate Clash Turns to Romance

Alexandra “Ali” Lennox, 35, has spent the last decade abroad, distancing herself from her privileged family and their billion-dollar company, Lennox Breweries. But when her father calls her back to Los Angeles to take over as CEO, she has no choice but to return.

Jill Gold, 53, has dedicated twenty years of her life to Lennox Breweries as COO. She’s built her career from the ground up and isn’t thrilled to find out she’ll be mentoring the boss’s daughter, whom she assumes is nothing more than a spoiled, entitled brat.

From the moment they meet, sparks fly—but not in a good way. Jill is all business, while Ali struggles to prove she’s more than just a trust-fund kid. But as they work together, Jill begins to see through Ali’s defenses, and Ali realizes there’s much more to Jill than just a cool, no-nonsense exterior.

Their attraction is undeniable—but between the power imbalance, company politics, and personal baggage, their romance seems doomed before it even begins. Will they risk everything for a shot at love?

What Works: Strengths of the Novel

  • Workplace Romance + Age Gap – Bliss is a master of the age-gap trope, and with an 18-year difference between the characters, the dynamic is compelling. Power struggles, professional boundaries, and mutual respect all come into play, making for an interesting setup.

  • Steamy Moments – One thing Bliss never fails to deliver is sensual, well-written intimacy, and this book is no exception. Even though the chemistry isn’t as strong as in her best books, the physical connection is definitely there.

  • Low-Angst and Quick-Paced – If you’re looking for a short, light read without too much emotional turmoil, this one fits the bill. There’s no excessive drama or heartbreak—just a straightforward romance with a corporate backdrop.

Where It Falls Short

  • Ali’s Character Feels Immature – One of the biggest struggles with this novel is Ali’s personality. While she’s supposed to be a 35-year-old executive-in-training, she often comes across as a spoiled, immature 25-year-old. Her growth arc feels too fast and somewhat unconvincing.

  • Jill’s Attraction Feels Underdeveloped – Jill is a powerhouse of a woman—experienced, competent, and confident. But her romantic interest in Ali feels more physical than emotional, making their connection seem forced rather than natural.

  • Rushed Pacing – At just over 200 pages, this book moves too quickly to fully develop the tension, emotional stakes, and gradual trust-building that could have made their romance more compelling. Their relationship turns from enemies to lovers too fast, making it harder to fully invest in their journey.

Final Thoughts

Next in Line for Love has all the right ingredients—corporate drama, age-gap tension, and a steamy romance—but it doesn’t quite come together as strongly as it could have. The chemistry feels rushed, the character development lacks depth, and the emotional stakes never fully land.

If you’re in the mood for a quick, low-angst workplace romance with some steamy scenes, this is a decent read, but it won’t leave a lasting impact. Harper Bliss has written stronger, more compelling romances, so while this one is enjoyable, it’s not one of her best.
